Getting to Potsdam

By Plane
Potsdam is located about 30 km southwest of Berlin, the German capital. Being a major tourist destination itself, there are direct flights to most European airports and a good connection to the German train network. Please be aware that there are two airports in Berlin, Tegel (IATA Code TXL) and Schönefeld (IATA Code SXF). The new Berlin Airport is still not open (future IATA Code BER)….we don’t want to talk about. Most intra-European budget airlines fly via Schönefeld, larger international carriers via Tegel. From Tegel take the bus X9 (destination: Zoologischer Garten) and change here to Regionalbahn or RB21/22 or S7 (see below), and get off at Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof. From Schönefeld take the Regionalbahn RB22 (direction: Potsdam Hbf or Potsdam Griebnitzsee) and get off at Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof.

By Train
To get to Potsdam by long distance train you will have to go via Berlin. From Berlin Central Station (Berlin Hauptbahnhof, abbreviation Berlin Hbf) you can take the regional train Regionalexpress RE1 in the direction: Magdeburg Hbf or Brandenburg Hbf
or Regionalbahn RB21/22 in the direction: Potsdam, Golm Bhf or S Bahn S7 in the direction Potsdam Hbf.

Getting around in Potsdam

Potsdam itself has a good public transport system, but in many cases you can simply walk. The website of the public transport company can be found here, unfortunately only in German.

Conference venue

ISEB 2019 will be held at the Telegrafenberg campus of the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).  The campus is centrally located close to the central railway station (Hauptbahnhof). There is a regular bus service from Hauptbahnhof to Telegrafenberg (Bus line 691), or you can take a 10 minute walk from the central station. Directions to the Telegrafenberg Campus and a map of the campus itself can be found here.

There are numerous hotels in Potsdam in all price ranges. You can find lots of helpful information about Potsdam at the website of Potsdam Tourism. It is also possible to stay in Berlin and commute to Potsdam via public transport. Expect a commute of about 45 minutes from Berlin Hauptbahnhof or Zoologischer Garten to Telegrafenberg Campus. Information about accomodation in Berlin can be found on the Berlin Tourism website.
